Why Advent Calendars Aren’t About Candy Anymore

Why Advent Calendars Aren’t About Candy Anymore

Our Favorite Holiday Tradition (And What We’re Tucking Behind Each Tiny Door)

Every December, I look for ways to slow the holiday chaos and bring more meaning into the season, something so many parents crave. For me, that pause comes tucked inside 24 tiny pockets for my daughters, Kaiya Rose and Kennedy Jade.

It’s one of my favorite parts of the season. Not just the unwrapping, but the choosing, the curating, the quiet pause it invites every morning. Some pockets hold a small treasure: a silk scrunchie from Sarah’s Silks, an Omy marker set, a special Tonie, or a new book for bedtime. Each piece is chosen with intention, and many come from the brands we already know and love through Rose + Jade.

But this isn’t about more stuff - it’s about more meaning. So, it doesn’t matter if it’s tucked inside Gathre’s classic and reusable advent calendar, or mason jars you have lying around the house. It’s about the moment and the meaning.

This year, instead of thinking day-by-day, I’m organizing our calendar by weekly themes. It’s a rhythm that keeps things grounded, joyful, and manageable - for me and for them.

Here’s what I’m planning:

~ A Week of Little Luxuries: soft socks, silky gloss, sleep masks, and mini spa moments

~ A Week of Wonder: stickers, sensory jars, holiday crafts, and a home art gallery

~ A Week of Story & Sound: Tonies, new books, twinkle lights, and storytime rituals

~ A Small Joys Countdown: cozy pajamas, festive socks, and a snow globe to end it all

So many of you have asked what I include, how I source items, and how to make it feel special without going overboard - so this year, I’m sharing it all:

Whether you make your own calendar, use a wooden heirloom one, or hang 24 envelopes on a string, Advent is a beautiful excuse to slow down and create traditions your kids will carry with them forever.

Here are 24 simple ideas you can tuck into your own Advent calendar, no sugar rush required:

1. Wear your favorite jammies and dance to holiday music

2. Read a winter book together by candlelight

3. Make hot cocoa with extra marshmallows

4. Draw a picture and mail it to a grandparent or friend

5. Choose a toy to donate to a child in need

6. Snuggle up and watch a holiday movie

7. Do a random act of kindness today
